2025 AAVN Clinical Nutrition & Research Symposium: A Comprehensive Review

Speakers, posters, and attendees at the AAVN 2025 Veterinary Conference presented by Animistic, featuring sessions and networking highlights.

The AAVN 2025 Veterinary Conference, officially known as the 25th Annual Clinical Nutrition & Research Symposium and hosted by the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition (AAVN), convened on June 20–21, 2025 at the Omni Louisville Hotel. With attendees spanning academia, industry, and clinical practice, the event offered a robust platform for emerging research and scientific discourse in both animal and pet nutrition. Representing Animistic, we had the privilege of attending and engaging with peers dedicated to advancing health outcomes through nutritional science.

Abstract Session I: Hospitalized Dogs, Lipidomics, and Feline Fiber Fermentation

Reed Wixon opened the session with a retrospective analysis exploring how nutrition support plans correlate with survival outcomes in hospitalized dogs. His findings suggest that individualized nutrition plans could improve clinical outcomes, emphasizing the need for strategic nutrition interventions in acute care. 

Pedro Marchi provided lipidomic insights into serum profiles of obese and weight-loss dogs. Through advanced metabolomics, he demonstrated that dietary-induced weight loss not only alters lipid concentrations but could also indicate specific metabolic shifts. These findings hold promise for better monitoring and managing canine obesity. 

Patricia Oba presented data on the in vitro fermentation characteristics of different dietary fibers using fecal inocula from antibiotic-treated cats. Her study highlighted distinct microbial and metabolic responses to various fibers, stressing the importance of fiber selection in post-antibiotic gut restoration in felines. 

Keynote: Dr. Kelly Swanson on Dietary Fiber in Companion Animals 

As part of the AAVN 2025 Veterinary Conference, Dr. Swanson’s keynote provided an exceptional overview of fiber’s multifaceted role in dog and cat physiology. His address dissected the ambiguity in fiber definitions and proposed a more functional classification system. He emphasized the need for: 

  • Precise characterization of fiber sources 
  • Standardization in analytical methodologies 
  • Integration of fiber functionality into diet formulation 

Swanson presented new insights into how dietary fiber influences: 

  • Gastrointestinal transit time 
  • Nutrient digestibility 
  • Microbiota composition and activity 
  • Satiety and body weight regulation 

He advocated for a holistic view that connects physicochemical properties with physiological outcomes, particularly through the lens of fermentability and short-chain fatty acid production. 

Abstract Session II: Antibiotics, Processing, and Mineral Supplementation

Sara Martini investigated the impact of dietary and fecal microbial transplants on the gut health of cats treated with antibiotics. Results showed notable improvements in microbial diversity and metabolic markers when transplants were included, indicating their potential as post-antibiotic interventions. 

Professor Aulus Carciofi on behalf of Lucas Scarpim delved into the effects of extrusion and hydrolysis on poultry meal. He showed how processing conditions alter Maillard reaction products and protein bioavailability. The findings encourage further refinement in pet food processing to balance safety with nutrient retention. 

Laura Amundson explored the role of amino acid-complexed trace minerals in Labrador Retrievers. Her data indicated enhanced mobility and metabolic responses, making a case for precise mineral supplementation to support active or aging canine populations. 

Poster Session Highlights

Numerous posters at the AAVN 2025 Veterinary Conference provided additional depth, particularly from researchers at the University of São Paulo and Premier Pet.

  1. Black Soldier Fly Larvae vs. Poultry Viscera in Dogs 
    The study demonstrated that BSFL is a viable protein source, with promising digestibility and metabolic profiles, comparable to poultry viscera. Microbiome and serum analyses supported its safety and efficacy. 
  1. Yeast Beta-Glucans in Dogs 
    Gradual increases in beta-glucans altered lipid metabolism and immune-related metabolites. These data offer a foundation for further exploration of yeast-derived components in metabolic support. 
  1. Weight Loss in Brazilian Cats 
    A multi-year review of over 500 medical records revealed low success rates in feline weight loss, especially when comorbidities were present. The study stressed the need for better protocol adherence and client engagement. 
  1. Comorbidity Patterns in Companion Animals 
    Among over 10,000 patients, 34% presented with comorbidities, the most common being overweight paired with endocrine, orthopedic, or cardiovascular conditions. These findings underscore the complexity of managing chronic conditions through nutritional strategies. 

Keynote: Dr. Stephanie Valberg on Equine Neuromuscular Disorders

Although focused on large animals, Dr. Valberg’s presentation was a masterclass in translational nutrition. She reviewed: 

  • Genetic and acquired neuromuscular conditions in horses 
  • The role of vitamin E, selenium, and dietary starch in disease modulation 
  • Diagnostic strategies combining nutrition, clinical signs, and histopathology 

Her findings promote individualized diet formulations to mitigate oxidative stress and support muscle metabolism—lessons with potential applications in canine and feline neurology. 

Abstract Session III: Canning, Taurine, and Betaine

Sophia Löffelmann, recipient of the ESVN Waltham Award, evaluated how canning influences phosphate solubility in pet foods. Her research noted that while total phosphorus may remain stable, its bioavailability is significantly altered by processing, with implications for renal health in pets. 

Alyssa Toillion, PhD, examined the taurine and SDMA status of kittens fed diets containing 20% rice protein concentrate. Her work confirmed that taurine levels remained within optimal ranges, alleviating concerns over plant-based proteins when appropriately formulated. 

Dr. Robert Backus presented on betaine as a marker of methionine adequacy in canine diets. His data suggest plasma betaine could serve as a cost-effective and minimally invasive biomarker for dietary sufficiency in methionine and related methyl donors. 

Closing Reflections 

The 2025 AAVN Symposium reinforced the indispensable role of scientific inquiry in elevating both animal and pet nutrition. From cutting-edge metabolomics to practical feeding strategies, each session echoed the need for multidisciplinary collaboration and translational thinking. 

While Animistic did not attend the Large Animal Nutrition Panel or the AAFCO Update, the content presented throughout the symposium provided substantial insights into: 

  • Nutrient-gene-environment interactions 
  • Innovations in ingredient processing 
  • The microbiome’s growing relevance 
  • Functional biomarkers for nutritional status
