Leadership at the Beginning: Lessons Learned from the Journey

By: Tracy Snider - February 5th, 2025; CEO of Animistic

What does it really take to step into a leadership role? When I became CEO of Animistic, I quickly discovered that leadership at the beginning isn’t the clear, straightforward path it’s often romanticized to be. It’s a journey filled with unexpected challenges, moments of self-doubt, and lessons that test both your resilience and your vision.

Leadership is not a destination; it’s a continuous process of growth. And in many ways, we are always at the beginning.

Overcoming the Three Major Attacks on New Leadership

Recently, my pastor spoke about the three major attacks that come when stepping into a new vision: discouragement, direct attacks, and distractions. These words resonated deeply—not just in faith, but in leadership. I’ve encountered all three in my own journey, and if you’re leading something meaningful, chances are, you have too.

Discouragement: The Weight of the Unknown

Not all challenges in leadership come as obvious opposition. Distractions can be just as detrimental—sometimes even more so. They often creep in quietly, showing up as:
  • Endless meetings that drain time without driving progress.
  • Shifting priorities that scatter focus and dilute the mission.
  • Personal doubts that pull attention away from the bigger picture.
In today’s fast-paced industry, it’s tempting to chase every new trend or respond to every small issue. But as a leader, maintaining clarity is crucial. I’ve learned to regularly ask myself:
  • What is the most important thing right now?
  • Does this task align with our mission and goals?
  • Am I being proactive or simply reacting to the latest distraction?
This focus on clarity was inspired in part by teachings from my pastor, Erik Lawson, whose insights on leadership have deeply influenced my journey. His podcast, the All Out Leadership Podcast, offers valuable lessons on navigating challenges with faith and resilience—wisdom that’s just as relevant in the boardroom as it is in life.

By focusing on these questions and principles, I’ve found it easier to stay mission-centered rather than moment-centered. At Animistic, this means dedicating our energy to innovative, science-driven solutions that truly make a difference in the animal nutrition industry.

Direct Attacks: The Price of Leading

Leading something new invites resistance. Whether it’s external criticism, internal pushback, or unexpected roadblocks, opposition is part of the journey. In fact, I’ve learned that the greater the vision, the stronger the pushback.

Shortly after stepping into my role, we faced skepticism from both within and outside the organization. Some questioned the direction we were headed, while others doubted the feasibility of our ambitious growth plans. It’s easy to take these attacks personally, but I’ve come to see them differently.

Leadership isn’t about avoiding attacks—it’s about responding to them with resilience, humility, and wisdom. Expect the attacks, but don’t let them define you. Instead, let them refine you.

Distractions: The Silent Killer of Progress

Not all challenges come in the form of obvious opposition. Distractions can be just as dangerous—sometimes even more so. They creep in quietly, taking the form of endless meetings, shifting priorities, or even personal doubts that pull your focus away from what truly matters.

In today’s fast-paced industry, it’s tempting to chase every new trend or respond to every minor issue. But as a leader, I’ve learned the importance of clarity. I continually ask myself: What is the most important thing right now? Where should my energy be focused?

Staying mission-centered, rather than moment-centered, has been crucial in keeping distractions at bay. At Animistic, this means focusing on our commitment to innovative, science-driven solutions that serve both the industry and the animals at the heart of it.

Leadership is a Process, Not a Destination

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is that leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about having the courage to ask the right questions. It’s about stepping forward, even when the path is uncertain. It’s about learning from both victories and failures, knowing that each challenge is refining the vision.

At Animistic, we’re committed to serving animals, individuals, and companies through science plus heart. Whether it’s developing sustainable nutrition strategies or providing personalized coaching for agribusiness professionals, our work is guided by a mission to help our clients thrive.

As we continue on this journey, I’m reminded that leadership isn’t about perfection—it’s about perseverance. Every beginning comes with challenges, but those challenges are what shape us into the leaders we are called to be.
