The recent conclusion of the FDA’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the pet food industry marks a significant turning point in how the FDA’s role in regulating pet food is defined. This shift highlights the growing importance of establishing clear and consistent FDA pet food regulations. The MOU, a longstanding agreement between the FDA and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), had set the framework for how pet food and feed products were regulated across the U.S. With its termination, the industry is at a crossroads, prompting a survey to ask stakeholders who should take the lead in regulating pet food: AAFCO as it stands, the FDA, or a self-regulated model.
The MOU between the FDA and AAFCO was a foundational agreement designed to foster collaboration in setting feed pet food regulations..
